Martin Vasquez

Head Coach/Technical Director

Former Mexico and United States National Team midfielder Martin Vasquez was named head coach and technical director of Grande Sports Academy and Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy prior to the 2011-12 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season.

During his time at Grande Sports Academy, Vasquez has led Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy to numerous accomplishments including the 2012-13 USSDA U-15/16 National Championship, reaching the 2013-14 USSDA U-15/16 final and becoming one of only three teams in the country to reach the USSDA playoffs in every season since 2010-11 in both the U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups.

Vasquez has been involved in professional soccer for over 30 years, playing in the Mexican Primera Division for Leones Negros, Puebla, Veracruz and Atlas and in Major League Soccer for the Tampa Bay Mutiny and San Jose Clash. On the international level, Vasquez is one of only two players to have represented both the Mexican and United States National Teams.

After retiring from his playing career, Vasquez worked for five seasons as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA in Major League Soccer. Vasquez then headed overseas to serve as an assistant coach for German powerhouse Bayern Munich for the 2008-09 Bundesliga season. After one season in Germany, Vasquez returned to Chivas USA–this time as the head coach.

Vasquez was named assistant coach of the United States Men’s National Team in 2011, helping lead the team to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup championship and successful qualification for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil before leaving the team in 2014.

Tony Bruce

Assistant Coach/Residential Administrator

With over 40 years of coaching and college identification experience, Tony Bruce is the key to Grande Sports Academy and Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy’s success in earning college scholarships for every graduate in academy history.

Since Bruce joined Grande Sports Academy for the 2011-12 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season, Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy has enjoyed unprecedented success, winning the 2012-13 USSDA U-15/16 National Championship and reaching the 2013-14 USSDA U-15/16 final.

Bruce previously coached teams throughout Southern California including the San Diego Surf, the Los Angeles Rampage, California State University Northridge as well as the Cal South and Region IV Olympic Development Programs.

Mike Kraus

Assistant Coach

Former Kansas City Wizards forward Mike Kraus was named assistant coach of Grande Sports Academy prior to the 2012-13 season, appointed to coach the Real Salt Lake-Arizona Elite program.

During his time at Grande Sports Academy, Kraus has led Real Salt Lake-Arizona Elite to numerous championships including the 2012 U-18 North Huntington Beach Cup, 2013 U-16 SC del Sol Desert Classic, 2013 U-16 Tuzos Soccer Challenge, 2014 U-16 SC del Sol Desert Classic, 2014 U-16 SC del Sol President’s Day Tournament and the 2014 U-17 Valparaiso United Invitational.

Kraus played college soccer for Creighton University from 2004-07, where he was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2006. The Kansas City Wizards then drafted Kraus with the 48th overall pick in the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft.

After leaving the Wizards, Kraus went on to coach Nebraska Futbol Club, Toro Soccer Club and Scottsdale Soccer Blackhawks before joining Grande Sports Academy.

Henry Brauner

Assistant Coach/Residential Administrator

Former Philippines National Team midfielder and Arizona native Henry Brauner was named assistant coach of Grande Sports Academy prior to the 2014-15 season, coaching the Real Salt Lake-Arizona Elite program with Mike Kraus.

During his time at Grande Sports Academy, Brauner has helped lead Real Salt Lake-Arizona Elite to the 2014 U-17 Valparaiso United Invitational championship, the first of many trophies to come.

Brauner played college soccer for Worcester State University from 2005-08, where he was named to the 2005 All-MASCAC Men’s Soccer Team. After college, Brauner spent one season with the New Hampshire Phantoms and another with the Ventura County Fusion, where Brauner won the 2009 USL Premier Development League championship.

After retiring from his playing career, Brauner worked for four seasons as an assistant coach for Pima College and FC Tucson. Brauner also served as the technical director of Tanque Verde Soccer Club from 2012-14.

Ignacio Hernandez

Goalkeeper Coach/Residential Administrator

Former United States, El Salvador and Costa Rica National Team goalkeeper coach Ignacio “Nacho” Hernandez was named goalkeeper coach of Grande Sports Academy and Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy prior to the 2012-13 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season.

During his time at Grande Sports Academy, Hernandez has helped lead Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy to numerous accomplishments including the 2012-13 USSDA U-15/16 National Championship and reaching the 2013-14 USSDA U-15/16 final.

Hernandez played professional soccer for over a decade throughout Mexico for teams such as Atlante, Toluca and his native Veracruz. After retiring from his playing career, Hernandez moved on to coaching, working as the goalkeeping director for the Cal South Olympic Development Program.

Domestically, Hernandez has served as goalkeeper coach for teams throughout Southern California including Pateadores, Santa Ana College, UCLA and the LA Galaxy, where Hernandez helped lead the team to the 2005 U.S. Open Cup and Major League Soccer Cup.

On the international level, Hernandez has worked as a goalkeeper coach for the Costa Rica, El Salvador, and United States National Teams, the last of which Hernandez helped capture the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup championship.

Aaron Powell

Athletic Trainer/Strength & Conditioning Coach

Board Certified Athletic Trainer Aaron Powell was named athletic trainer/strength and conditioning coach of Grande Sports Academy and Real Salt Lake-Arizona Academy during the 2014-15 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season.

Powell previously worked with Real Salt Lake from 2012-13 as an intern athletic trainer while completing his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training at the University of Utah.

After graduating from Utah, Powell enrolled at Georgia State University to earn his Master of Science in Sports Medicine. While attending GSU, Powell served as graduate assistant athletic trainer at the school and as certified athletic trainer for the Atlanta Silverbacks.
